Cranberry Sauce

Please put down the can of cranberry sauce.  I know the can-shaped cranberry sauce is fun to look at and play with, but I beg you to please try my recipe and you’ll finally find out what real cranberry sauce tastes like.  Good news if you’ve already bought the canned stuff, it’ll probably last another 187 years so you can save it for a rainy day.

From Spoonfulosugar

Total Prep/Cook Time: around 10 minutes
Makes: about 2 1/2 cups

1 lb. fresh cranberries, washed and dried
2 c. granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
2 cinnamon stick
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 orange, zest & juice

In a medium pot, stir together the cranberries, sugar and water.  Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.  Reduce to a simmer and add the cinnamon stick, allspice, and nutmeg.  Stir together and simmer for about 5 minutes more, most of the cranberries will burst and the sauce will thicken up a bit.  Add the orange zest and juice.  Remove the cinnamon stick and stir.  Allow to cool before serving.  This can be made a few days before Thanksgiving, it will keep just fine the refrigerator.
